My Experience at IMTS

Posted by Gavin Mason

My Trip to IMTS 2014

The International Manufacturing and Technology Show (IMTS) is exactly what the title implies, anything and everything to do with manufacturing can be found at this show. The show is held at Chicago's McCormick place, which is the perfect venue due to its massive size. For those that are unfamiliar with the McCormick Place, it is one massive building that is actually made up of several interconnected buildings that can be used for a variety of things (it is home to the Chicago Auto Show).

CPM's Competitive Advantage

Competitive Advantage in Sand Casting

By definition, competitive advantage means "a condition or circumstance that puts a company in a favorable or superior business position." After 3 generations of ownership and 50+ years in business, we believe we have developed a distinct competitive advantage over many of our competitors. Our competitors can be grouped into four groups because our competitive advantage allows us to compete in several markets. Our competitors are either a foundry, pattern shop, machine shop, or any combination of the three.

Honoring The Brave Men and Women

Honoring Those Who Risk Their Lives to Protect Ours

A day late and a dollar short, but it's never too late to honor those who serve our country. Yesterday was memorial day and not thinking ahead, I did't set up a post to honor the brave men and women who serve our country. Better late than never right?

Inspecting Your Castings

Destructive Inspections

There are many types of inspection services that are available to our customers here at CPM Industries, many of which we can perform in-house. Then there are other inspection services that require high tech equipment which we do not have in-house... well at least not yet. There are two broad groups that categorize inspections, destructive and non-destructive; by their title I'm sure you have already figured out the differences.

Keeping an Eye on Additive Manufacturing

GE Makes Another Advancement in 3D Printing

In the past I have blogged about 3D Printing, also known as additive manufacturing, and the possibilities it creates for the manufacturing industry. Within those blogs, I focused on GE because they were leading the way in additive manufacturing and are continuing to do so. Additive manufacturing has become popular in the aerospace industry due to its ability to create unique and complex designs which were previously not possible with other manufacturing methods.

Algebra for Castings?

Posted by Gavin Mason

Reverse Engineering

Ok, so there is no such thing as algebra for castings, but there is something similar. In algebra, you are given an equation and told to solve it or sometimes you are given the answer to an equation and told so solve for a missing number within the equation. This is the same concept that is used in the Reverse Engineering of castings.

Quality over Quantity

Only Post Quality Content

All throughout my college career, my marketing professor routinely reinforced the concept that "content is king." No matter what we were covering at that given time, the professor would always seem to find a way to remind us that content is king in marketing. Even with my professor constantly enforcing the idea, I still thought that appearance and first impressions were more important to holding a viewer's attention (I was young and knew everything). It wasn't until I started taking three hundred and four hundred level classes that I realized that content is most definitely king, not only in marketing, but in just about everything.

Testing Methods for Castings

Posted by Gavin Mason

Exploring Testing Methods

Another question we are commonly asked at CPM Industries is the difference between testing methods. To answer this question, I originally started to write a blog where I explained the differences between the most common testing methods. After explaining just one method, I realized that explaining each one would result in a short novel. In order to be more reader friendly, I searched the building and discovered an old chart in our testing room. I have no idea where the chart came from or who produced so I can't give credit where it is due, but it does contain quality information.

Vacuum Forming Plastics

Over the years we have had several customers ask us if have the capabilities to produce a Vacuum Form Pattern for them. The answer is yes, we certainly do have the capabilities for vacuum form patterns but we specialize in Foundry Patterns. Well as the years went by with more and more customers seeking vacuum form patterns, CPM went from being capable to fully qualified in vacuum form patterns.
